DIY Tablet/eReader Case

Dec 19, 2014

Hello there! Today, I have a fun DIY project to share with you and it's on how to make a flip-cover case for your tablet or eReader. Honestly, some cases in the market are so expensive and absolutely not worth the price they ask for. My sister also has a fairly old version of a Sony eReader (not a popular brand for eReaders either) so she wasn't able to find any case online for it.

For this tutorial, you'll be able to make a case that flips open and stand on it's side if necessary. Of course it won't be as sturdy as the ones you buy in stores because of the material we will be using but it will be designed to your liking!

Jeju Island

Dec 8, 2014

Here is another set of photos from my vacation this past summer. You can anticipate 2 more after this one LOL. Right after Seoul, my family and I flew to Jeju Island and let me tell you, I was pretty excited; this is like the getaway place that you always see in Korean dramas. If you like nature, this is the place for you to go. Oh, and if there's one thing you must eat in Jeju, it's their oranges! DELICIOUS.

This nature-filled photo set contains snapshots from Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Samseunghyeol, Yongduam Rock, Sangumburi Cave, Jeju Folk Village, and Manjanggul Cave.

Seoul Adventures Part 2

Nov 23, 2014

Here is the long overdue part 2 post about my trip in Seoul, Korea this summer. If you would like to look at pictures from part 1 of the trip, click here.

This photo set contains pictures from Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, Banpo Bridge, FOOOOD, and some random snapshots.

It rained quite a bit during the last few days I spent in Seoul. I just remember my shoes getting so soaked in the rain and still having to walk in them for most of the day. Squishy, cold water between your toes and the soles of your feet is horrible. I think what I miss most about Seoul is the food... gamjatang, seoulleongtang, jajangmyeon, bulgolgi, soondubu jigae, samgyetang, kimchi, and the list goes on yummm :D

Dressed Up

Oct 21, 2014

Rarely (or rather never) do I dress up when I go to school. On a regular basis, I just throw on a simple top and jeans/comfy pants. The reason I dressed up a bit more today is because today is a big day for me. I'll be attending a ceremony at my school to accept a scholarship I was recently awarded! I am extremely honoured that I was chosen for it and I am nothing less than thankful. Those sleep-less nights and studying finally paid off!

Seoul Adventures Part 1

Oct 15, 2014

Sorry for not posting for awhile! It has been a hectic midterm season (7 midterms and 3 assignments total) so I hope you understand my absence. Today, I'd like to share with you some pictures from my summer vacation with my family. Over the summer holidays, we had the awesome opportunity to vacation in several parts of Asia! Our first stop was to the beautiful city of Seoul in South Korea.

When I travel, I never dress well. I just don't have the energy to do anything in the morning when I travel with my family because my dad likes to wake up super early and end the day late. Never have I had a "relaxing" trip - always in a hurry to go to the next place!

This photo set contains just a couple of shots at Namsan Tower, the DMZ and surrounding areas, Myeongdong, and Korean Folk Village.

DIY Patterned/Printed Clothes

Sep 6, 2014

For me personally, I've really been wanting a bird printed t-shirt for the longest time after seeing it on a few actresses and bloggers. It's a really uncommon print and although I saw some online, the prices were ridiculous. Sooooo when you can't afford it, you make it! Here's a method to save you a couple of dollars to get that pattern you've always wanted.

Nineteenth First Day Of School

Sep 3, 2014

I had very mixed feelings with school starting this year. On one hand, I was excited to go to school because I could finally do something productive with my time and learn. On the other hand, I would have to start studying again and not be able to sleep in all the time. That... is my shameful first world problem.

Anyways, as a continuation of my post last year, here's another first day of school outfit post. I've been really loving these red TOMS lately- I'm enjoying wearing some brighter colours before fall comes.

How To Make A Scalloped Lace Top - Talula Inspired

Aug 3, 2014

Hello everyone! Sorry that it has been so long since I've posted. I suddenly got into a sewing mood again so I have another tutorial to show you! I found this lace fabric on sale at the fabric store and noticed that it's the same one used in the Talula Betsy Blouse. I thought I would give it a shot and recreate the top myself. Keep reading to learn how to make it!

[A YouTuber with the name "withwendy" has a DIY tutorial video similar to the one I'm about to give with inspiration coming from the same piece of clothing. This tutorial is my own take on the blouse and is in no way using any ideas from her video]

Blog Turns One! - Year In Review

Jul 12, 2014

Woohoo, today marks the first birthday of A Splash Of Tan!!! *virtual hi-five* Yup, I made a party hat just to take this picture. I never thought I would make it to this day because I didn't think I would keep posting. I can tell you very truthfully that getting to this point has been difficult. Blogging took a toll on me for at least the last 6 months. Sounds a little dramatic, right?

When I made my first post on this blog on July 12, 2013, I was really excited to have my own public outlet to share things with everyone, my way. Blogging gives you a lot of freedom- you choose what to write and what to take pictures of. When I hit that "publish" button, I felt so happy knowing that someone would be reading my content.

Many of you don't know I had a blog before "A Splash Of Tan." I will not share that one with you because it has more personal posts that I do not wish for everyone to read. I do however want to share with you one excerpt that I had on a post I wrote about social media:

I Want It That Way: eShakti Review

Jun 24, 2014

If you know me well, you know that I love to buy things online. The ease of just sitting and shopping at the same time is so much more relaxing. eShakti was a new website to me so when they contacted me to do a review, I was very excited because their clothes looked awesome online. The shopping experience I had with them was different; in short, it was easy, simple, and fun. I chose a plain black dress but they have so many more options for whatever style of clothing you like.

Summer

Jun 14, 2014

Right before I finished second year, I had a checklist in mind as to what I wanted to accomplish this summer. I decided not to take summer school this year so I had a lot of free time I needed to make productive.

- Find a part-time job
- Volunteer at the hospital
- Learn to drive

I am happy that I can check off all the things on my list! The hardest thing to get was a volunteer position at the hospital because they have so many applicants per year. They placed me in the NICU/pediatrics area! The families and volunteers there are so sweet which makes the shift a lot more rewarding.

Explorer

Jun 1, 2014

In my community, there are a couple of forest trails open for anyone to go through. I haven't walked through them since last year and not much has changed. It's basically the same since I was 6! Trees, forest litter, small plants, little animals, and occasionally some deer sightings. The view you see from the trail is so concealed from what is off the trail. I went exploring in some hidden trails once in one of the forests and I saw an old mattress, chair, and umbrella. Was someone living there?! I quickly got out of there... paranoia from watching too many movies!

The Second Decade

May 29, 2014

There are moments when I can't believe I'm 20 years old now. I don't even know what age I look like- I am sometimes mistaken as a high school student but other rare occasions am I mistaken for someone in their early 20s. My birthday was in early May and I spent my day playing PS3 with friends. I didn't get a chance to celebrate with family/friends on the day of because it was Mother's Day and my mom and sister weren't at home. I had a birthday dinner with my friends the day after though and this was what I wore!

How To Make Elasticized Shorts

May 6, 2014

Making a pair of shorts has been a huge challenge for me. I attempted two other shorts before finally succeeding with the pair shown above! Using an elastic as opposed to a fixed waistband makes it a lot easier because you don't have to be so precise with measurements. I used this deer print fabric to make a pair of pajama shorts but you can use whatever fabric to make elasticized shorts for everyday wear too. Continue reading if you'd like to learn how to make these!

Borrowing From My Sister

Apr 17, 2014

I took these pictures awhile back since you can still see some snow in the background. Funny thing though, it actually snowed yesterday. It's not normal! I've never really experienced snow in mid April- we had 20 some odd degree weather a few days ago and the next morning, I woke up to everything covered in white.

The perks of having a sister who is the same size as you is getting to share clothes. The boots and the scarf I'm wearing are my sister's and she gave me the tee as well. Good thing she lets me wear her clothes or else I would have to sneakily go into her closet. With my sister, I go with the saying, "what is yours is mine."

Dark Raspberry

Apr 2, 2014

There are a few colours I really like wearing: mint, light pink, navy, maroon, and now I will add this dark raspberry colour to it. It's not too girly but it still gives off a little feminine vibe with the skirt. Not to mention, the fabric was only $2 before tax. For the price of fabric in comparison to the price of a real skirt, I think that is why I will rarely buy a skirt over $15. When you start sewing some basic clothing items, store prices just seem outrageous.

Spring Is Finally Coming

Mar 29, 2014

I'm back! This has got to be the longest break I've taken from my blog but hey, I have one more week of classes until my final exams! To add on top of my excitement, spring is finally coming... I can feel it. The snow is sloooooowly melting. Normally around this time, most if not all of the snow would have been gone by now. I'm happy that the temperatures got slightly warmer today so I finally got a chance to break out my new spring jacket. I like how the gold detailing makes this jacket a bit different from the ones I've seen in other stores.

How To Make A Journal Pen Holder

Mar 2, 2014

I am extremely excited to share this DIY with you guys! Not too long ago, I received an email from Tiny Prints and they were able to give me a lot of inspiration from their website; inspiration can honestly come from anywhere. While browsing, I came across their personalized notebooks and challenged myself to think of how I could incorporate sewing with stationery. Slowly but surely, this idea finally popped into my head!

I know one of my biggest pet peeves is not having a pen around when I need one or having to search really hard in my bag for one. Here's the solution: a journal pen holder! You just simply wrap it around the cover of your book and you'll have something to write with wherever you go! Many journals are similar in size so this accessory can easily be reused. Below, I have two variations you can make.

My Everyday

Feb 27, 2014

If I ever had to describe my go-to outfit, this would be it: a cardigan and a not-so-basic top paired with jeans and boots/sneakers/flats. Sometimes I'm mind-blown by how simple and plain my outfits are (though I'm very comfortable in them). Like Joyce, can you not try something bolder and accessorize? I guess it's like how some people gravitate toward prints or lace, I just gravitate to solid colours and basics!

They Didn't Make The Cut

Feb 25, 2014

Unless the image is really blurry or nothing can be seen clearly, I generally keep every single photo from every post that I've done. I know, the amount of space that takes up on my laptop memory is huge. I guess I saved them thinking I would need a good laugh one day! And so, this is really how my outfit shoots are like; the photos you see in the actual posts make up probably 20% of the total images that were taken. Honestly speaking, some of these photos are really embarrassing... but hey, I can laugh at myself now! Hopefully you'll get a few chuckles out of this! So, here are the images that just couldn't make the cut. Click the titles if you want to link back to the original post (with normal photos) :)

How To Make A Skirt With Hidden Pockets

Feb 15, 2014

I love wearing skirts during the spring and summer time. The only problem I really have is that some of them don't have pockets! I mean, I could carry a bag but sometimes I want to put small things in my pocket without having to dig for them in my bag. Keep reading to learn how to make this easy skirt!

Peony

Feb 4, 2014

Believe it or not, I went on Google to try to determine what kind of flower is printed on my top. My hunch is that they are peonies but I'm stuck between that and chrysanthemums. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't either of those flowers because I know nothing about them.  Did you know the peony was named after the Greek physician god, Paean? Peony... physician... medicine... my career aspiration - I'm destined to wear this flower!

Floral print is one of those patterns that I consider to be a "happy print". It just seems to brighten up an outfit and it makes me so cheery! Polka dots gives me that same feeling but stripes isn't one of them. I don't know, does anyone else feel this way?

Why I Don't Like Being Called Skinny

Jan 27, 2014

This is pretty different from what I normally write about. It was something that was recently on my mind and I needed a medium to express my opinions. It's lengthy too!

Our society today has built such an ideal look for women that is constantly being fed to us through the media. I think it can generally be agreed upon that among numerous cultures today, a skinny girl is preferred. I so happen to fall under that category, and it just so happens that I don't like to be reminded that I do.

Where It's Warm, I'm There

Jan 25, 2014

I wanted to do several outfit posts this entire week but every morning, I ended up throwing on a sweater, jeans, and my chunky winter boots. Winter is the season for me to dress simple - comfort and practicality over style to stay warm. After experiencing winter for so many years, you may think that I would have gotten used to it by now. Never have I experienced temperatures close to -30 and below. If it's cold enough to freeze my skin, I'm going to bundle up as much as I can.

Radiant Orchid

Jan 18, 2014

I saw all these blog posts on Pantone's colour of the year and it got me curious on what the buzz was all about. I can confidently say that I absolutely love the colour! Great choice, Pantone.

After looking at the colour for awhile, the shade looked extremely familiar to me and I then realized that my prom dress was in this colour! I'm a little hesitant to post my prom pictures but continue scrolling down this post to view my dress. Well, I might as well share it if this post is all about purple!

Purple IS my favourite colour for the longest time now. I actually don't think the colour suits my skin tone well but it's so pretty!!! Here are a few items that I found in the colour radiant orchid (or close to). I would get everything on my list if I could!

How to Add a Scalloped Hem

Jan 13, 2014

I've been really into doing DIY things lately (especially since I am broke after the Christmas holidays and can't afford to buy things myself). I hope you enjoy this one!

I really have loved this type of hem for the longest time but I don't see it very often among clothing stores. It adds a sweet touch to an outfit, doesn't it? When you can't buy it, then you make it yourself!

Challenges Accepted

Jan 10, 2014

I have officially completed the first week of my second semester! Honestly, my semester seems so relaxing because I have Mondays and Fridays off. Hooray for 4 day weekends!  I think what I'm most looking forward to this semester is not my long weekend but rather that I can sleep in for two extra days. Let's hope that I don't begin to slack off! Challenge 1: still try to treat Mon and Fri as school days this semester. I have so much time now so I was planning on heading to the mall today. I got all dressed up and then being my indecisive self ended up staying at home. Well, here's my outfit!
